If you're trying to hide the list of people you follow from nosy friends, partners, or strangers on the internet, you're not alone. Users have begged Instagram for a "hide follow list" toggle for years.
Unfortunately, as of 2026, that toggle does not exist. Anyone who promises you a secret settings menu or an app that hides your list while staying public is lying to you. The rest of this guide covers what actually works, exactly who each method hides your list from, and the trade-offs you're accepting in return.
The Truth About Public Accounts
If your account is Public, your Followers and Following lists are public. Period. Instagram exposes those connections through its public data, which is why third-party tools like our Recent Follower Viewer can read and display them. There is no setting that keeps your account public while hiding only the following list — visibility of the two is tied together by design.
So the real question isn't "how do I hide it" — it's "how much reach am I willing to give up to hide it," because every working method costs you something.
Do “hide following list” apps work?
No. Any app or website claiming it can hide your following list while your account stays public is either useless or a scam. There is no private API for this, so there is nothing legitimate for such an app to call. What these tools actually do falls into three buckets:
- Credential harvesters — they ask you to "log in to hide your list" and steal your session.
- Survey / CPA traps — they make you complete an endless "human verification" loop that pays them and does nothing for you.
- Placebos — they charge a fee and change nothing, betting you won't check.
If your list is public and you want it hidden, the only levers are the native ones below. No exceptions.
Method 1: The Private Account Switch
Going Private is the only way to shield your following list from the general public and from third-party tools in one move.
- Go to your profile and tap the three lines in the top right.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Under "Who can see your content", select Account privacy.
- Toggle on Private account.
The moment you flip this, non-followers can no longer see your posts, followers, or following list, and public viewer tools lose access too. The trade-off is reach: private accounts don't appear on the Explore page or hashtag results, which matters if you're building an audience.
What private still shows (and to whom)
Going private is not a blackout. Anyone you've already approved as a follower can still open your following list and scroll through it freely — private only stops new and unapproved accounts. Your username, profile photo, bio, and follower/following counts also stay visible to everyone; it's the list contents that get locked, not the numbers.
In other words, if the person you're trying to hide from already follows you, switching to private does nothing about them. For that, you need one of the next two methods.
Method 2: Remove the Follower
To hide your list from a specific person who already follows you, remove them as a follower (this works cleanly once you're private, so they can't simply re-view the profile).
- Open your Followers list.
- Find their name.
- Tap Remove next to it.
They aren't notified. But if your account is public, nothing stops them from finding your profile again and re-following, so removing only sticks if you're also private (their new follow request then needs your approval). It's the right tool when you want distance from one person without the finality of a block.
Method 3: Blocking
Blocking is the only way to keep a public account while shutting one specific person out completely. It severs everything: they can't find your profile, view your posts, or see who you follow. The downside is that it's obvious — a determined person will notice they've been blocked — and it only covers that one account, not any alts they might use.
Why “Restrict” won’t do it
Instagram's Restrict feature often gets suggested for this, but it's the wrong tool. Restrict is built for quietly limiting someone's comments and DMs — it does nothing to hide your following or followers lists. A restricted person can still see exactly who you follow. If list privacy is the goal, Restrict is a dead end; use private + remove, or block.

Can I hide my following list but keep my account public?
No. There is no native setting for this and no legitimate app that does it. Public account means public lists.
Will people be notified if I remove them as a follower?
No notification is sent. They may notice later when they can no longer see your content, but Instagram doesn't alert them at the moment of removal.
Does going private hide my follower and following counts?
